Sacred Heart of Jesus Church
Update Regarding Closing of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church
On April 5, 2008 a meeting was held at St. Anthony of Padua Church concerning the status of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Several Sacred Heart Parishioners and Alumni members met with Father Thomas Chambers, CSC, from the Holy Cross Congregation of Priests and Father Ian Bordenave, O.P., Dean and Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish. Father Chambers said that the Holy Cross Congregation would not be returning to Sacred Heart Parish in New Orleans due to a shortage of Holy Cross Priests and Brothers and also due to a lack of vocations. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church possesses first-class relics, a beautiful Crucifix, a lovely Pieta, part of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ and many sacred vessels and statues. It is our hope that these beautiful articles will be saved and possibly be moved to St. Anthony Church. At the present time, there are no plans to demolish any buildings on the campus. Several meetings are planned in the near future with former parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish and Father Ian Bordenave, O.P., Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church. All are hoping for a smooth transition and perhaps one day New Orleans will reach new heights and our beloved Sacred Heart of Jesus Church will once again open her doors to all who hold her dear.
